Sebastian Vettel
won the Malaysian GP yesterday. He ignored orders from the team to
hold his position and let Mark Webber continue on to the win. This
was something the team had agreed to do at the beginning of the race,
to hold the driver positions towards the end of the race to avoid
losing any one of them due to high tire wear. But Vettel ignored team
orders and pushed ahead of Webber. In the past Webber has let Vettel
go through for wins different occasions or not pushed Vettel when
ordered to hold his position by the team. There lots of debate going
on in different circles about this. Some accusing Vettel for his
self-centeredness and others accusing Red Bull racing for being a
team that is unfairly towards Webber and favors Vettel. But at the
end of the season when all is said and done like it always has, there
will be a winner and in some years time only that will matter.
Looking at this
incident I could not help but ask, is all that matters is success?
Are things exactly as Jerry Maguire said it, “SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!”
We would in certain circles like to point to a higher calling, a
bigger picture, a cause above ourselves. But is that really how it
works? After all our words are just energy floating through
atmosphere. And as cliched as it may sound, actions do speak louder
than words. After all the rhetoric is over, what do I see? All that
matters is money, all that matters is control, all that matters is
power. Or is it? Is there really a higher cause to live for? I sure
hope there is. Because I have more or less put all my money on that
horse. But if it is as we would like our words to make others
believe, why do our actions betray the opposite being true for us in
reality? Are we after all just primal creatures out to win and
survive at all costs, who given their dose of intellect cannot help
but try and glorify and sanctify their baseness with labels of a
higher cause?
